A round-the-world journey of heat:

The use of spicy chillies in various cultures

Spiciness is a universal flavour embraced around the world, and one of the most intriguing ways this is achieved is through the use of spicy chillies. Let’s take a flavourful journey through different countries and cultures to discover how these little fire fruits have become an essential part of culinary traditions.

Mexico: Birthplace of Spice

In Mexico, spicy chillies like jalapeño, habanero and serrano are indispensable in cooking. From salsas to tacos, these chillies not only add heat but also bring complex flavours that distinguish Mexican cuisine.

India: Spice explosion in curries

India is known for its spicy dishes and curries. Here, chillies like the bhut jolokia and the red-hot ghost pepper play a central role. They are used to add depth and intensity to dishes, making every bite a tasty adventure.

Thailand: Spicy Harmony in Tom Yum

Thai cuisine is renowned for its balance of sweet, sour, salty and spicy. Thai chillies, such as bird’s eye chilli, bring an unmistakable spiciness to dishes like Tom Yum soup. They create an explosion of flavours that tantalise the senses.

Jamaica: Jerk Spice Magic

On the Caribbean island of Jamaica, Scotch bonnet pepper plays a starring role in the famous jerk seasoning. Used to marinate meat, this spicy mix offers a flavourful combination of heat and spices that define Jamaican cuisine.

South Korea: Kimchi’s Spicy Kick

Kimchi, the fermented side dish from South Korea, gets its distinctive spiciness from gochugaru, a Korean chilli powder. It not only gives a kick, but also adds to the complexity of flavour of fermented dishes.

Spicy chillies are not just spices; they tell the story of local cuisines and the diversity of flavours around the world. Whether you like a mild tingle or a flaming explosion, these little powerhouses are sure to add a world of flavour to any meal.
